Wind gusts of more than 100kph felled trees and limbs and closed roads at Laceby, Glenrowan and near Cheshunt on Friday evening.
Rural City of Wangaratta council crews were continuing to clear debris off Paradise Falls Road on Saturday.
Wangaratta SES unit controller Jess Zuber said it appeared a very strong wind gust had cut a narrow swathe of damage in parts of the rural city.
“People in Mansfield reported tornado-like winds felling trees and powerlines, but we’re uncertain here, apart from the fact the wind was strong and damaging,” she said.
“We’ve got 500 metre sections in various areas where large trees have been felled.
"Sections of roads were just littered with trees.
“Wangaratta airport recorded a wind speed of 113kph at 8.48pm.
“We had one crew go out at 9pm to Laceby to clear trees from the Snow Road, as well as trees on the old Hume Highway near Glenrowan.
“Another crew went to the King Valley where Cheshunt copped the brunt.
“They worked with the council crew, local residents and Cheshunt CFA...it took three hours to cut through the impacted section on Rose River Road, and other roads were impacted.”
