Wangaratta RSL Sub-Branch invites its members and the public to attend Tuesday's Remembrance Day service at the Wangaratta Cenotaph.

A minute's silence is annually observed at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month, and dedicated to those soldiers who died fighting to protect Australia.

It harks back to the armistice (suspension of fighting) at 11am on 11 November, 1918, when the guns on the Western Front fell silent after more than four years of continuous warfare.

The 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month attained special significance in the post-war years, becoming universally associated with the remembrance of those who had died in World War 1.

Originally known as Armistice Day, it was renamed Remembrance Day after World War 2 to commemorate those who were killed in both world wars, and now extends to commemorate the loss of Australian lives from all wars and conflicts.

For Tuesday's Remembrance Day service in Wangaratta, those attending are asked to arrive at the Wangaratta Cenotaph on the corner of Ovens Street and Docker Street at 10am, and be seated by 10.20am ready for the service to commence at 10.30am.

There will be a minute's silence at 11am, and the service will conclude at 11.30am.

A light luncheon provided by the women's auxiliary will be held at the Wangaratta RSL in Templeton Street from 12 noon, and is available to all veterans, carers and their families.
