Works on one of Wangaratta's busiest roads, Swan Street, have begun and a section of the road will be closed to traffic until mid-April next year.
Road construction works on Swan Street, between Steane Street and the One Mile Creek bridge abutment will take place at a cost of about $1 million.
Traffic management will be in place to allow residents access to properties during the period of works.
Variable message signs (VMS) will be in place providing notice of the upcoming road closures.
Works include installation of new drainage pipes and pits from One Mile Creek to Larkings Street and Muntz Street intersection along with drainage works on Cusack Street.
Drainage works commenced on 5 November and will continue until 25 December.
Road excavation works will commence mid January until 15 April next year.
Schedule of works include:
10 Nov-7 Dec: Swan Street closed to through traffic
8 Dec: Temporary reopening of Swan Street
8 - 19 Dec: Larkings Street closed to through traffic between Muntz Street and Swan Street
Mid Jan 2026: Second phase of reconstruction begins
15 Apr 2026: Project completion
Throughout the duration of works full road closures will be implemented as required by the contractor from the Swan Street Bridge to Steane Street, no through traffic will be permitted at these times.
Swan Street residents (between the Swan Street Bridge and Steane Street) will be required to access properties via Larkings Street from 10 November, this access will be maintained throughout the works, with only minimal disruptions on certain days.
When construction works allow, Swan Street will be reopened to through traffic to minimise disruptions to the community.
Signage and traffic controllers will guide residents through changed conditions.
Pedestrians will be escorted through the worksite when required, but are advised to avoid the area if possible.
Council will aim to minimise disruption to residents.
Further details will be shared at wangaratta.vic.gov.au/Development/Our-Projects/Swan-Street-Road-Reconstruction as the project progresses.
