WANGARATTA local Bob Murray will be inducted into the St Kilda Hall of Fame this Saturday at the Saints' 150 year anniversary celebration.
The celebration is taking place at the MCG this weekend before the Saints and Bombers clash on Saturday night and many present and future St Kilda Hall of Fame inductees will be in attendance as well as select members of the St Kilda Football Club.
Mr Murray played at full back in the Saints' first and only premiership in 1966, back when the team was in the VFL, and is excited for the celebration.
"I'm looking forward to seeing a lot of my old friends again and also it's great to be part of the celebration itself," he said.
"It's a big milestone, we're just so unfortunate to have only been able to win the one flag."
Mr Murray played 153 games for the Saints during 11 seasons from 1963 to 1964 and said what he remembered most from his time at the club was the close relationships he had with the other players on the field.
"I remember the camaraderie and the friendships that we had and that we just played footy for sport and still worked during the week," he said.
"It's great to be part of a group of blokes I really respected and liked."
As well as his upcoming induction to the St Kilda Hall of Fame, he is also a part of the Saints' team of the century.
He continued to stay involved in footy even after retiring by coaching many teams including the Wangaratta Rovers seconds team and most recently the Merriwa Magpies.
Mr Murray said he was happy about the Saints unexpected winning streak at the start of this season and hoped St Kilda can finally get their second flag this year.
"They're very good so far, it wasn't expected for the team to be this good but they've done terrific so far even though they've got a few out injured," he said.
"We're all hoping that maybe this year they can bring home the bacon, they've been so close so many times, a premiership would be good in the celebratory 150th year."
