WHOROULY Football Netball Club wrapped up their 2021 season on Friday night, with the vote count for best and fairest held via Facebook Live.

Andrew Newton (45 votes) received the top honour in the seniors list by four votes ahead of Ben Paul (41 votes), while key defender Ebony Allen took out the A grade netball best and fairest award with 51 votes.

Club president Eddie Costenaro said the online event was extremely successful, with the club utilising what they had learned in the past two COVID–affected seasons.

"We've been doing a live raffle online for the last two years since COVID – every Thursday night we'd run it and we sort of just came up with that idea," he said.

"We're probably not going to get the chance to do anything else, so we used Facebook Live.

"It ran pretty smoothly – we basically had our Powerpoint presentation already done up with all the votes as we do with the vote count night.

"We then ran it live, we started with the under 15s and went up to C grade and so on to seniors.

"We had a couple of little breaks – most people said that was quite good, but they had to restart Facebook Live when we stopped but that was something that was a bit unknown to all of us.

"But it worked pretty well."

Senior football coach Ben Kneebone commended Newton's season, but said the race for the award was a close one.

"Andy had a really consistent year – he started as a forward but as the year went on we just had to put him around the footy because of his ball–winning ability," Kneebone said.

"He always competes hard at training and is just a guy who loves playing with his teammates.

"Ben Paul put in another consistent, high–quality season.

"He missed some footy due to injury but influenced every game he played.

"Riley Calvene was rewarded for some really hard work over the preseason, finishing in third – he's got a ton of potential and grew in confidence as the year progressed.

"Ed Bramich and Lachy Moore finished in fourth and fifth, which shows how exciting it is to have so many young guys finish in the top six."

Ebony Allen was far ahead of the rest of the A grade netball list, 27 votes clear of runner up Claire Turnbull (24 votes).

"Eb has had a stellar year," A grade coach Deb Newton said.

"She has been very consistent in defence, with so many rebounds and turnovers to her name.

"She's just a great team player."

Costenaro said the club was still looking to hold an in–person presentation night, but would wait for COVID restrictions to ease further before setting a date.

"I think a few of the guys were hanging out to see how the year went," he said.

"Like I said, we're not going to open up too soon so we thought we'd give it a crack, and we've had positive feedback and everything.

"We'll hold the presentation night whenever we can.

"Thanks to all our supporters and players for having a crack this year – hopefully they'll all be back and raring to go next year.

"Hopefully it'll be a bit freer next year."
