Players sweat through tough aggregate tennis tournament

It may have been the most challenging Saturday so far this season in terms of playing conditions, but that didn’t stop the cream of the crop from rising to the top on the courts at Merriwa Park. The near 30-degree heat and muggy conditions didn’t stop Ryan Patterson from taking another section one win, plundering 21-14, just ahead of Andrew Lindner (20-19). Kevin Callahan (19-17) managed to edge out Brian Scobie (19-18), while Ashley Weston came in with 13-24. Riley Minns was the one to beat in section two, which saw him claim the title with a four-game buffer with his 24-24. Barry Sullivan (20-18) was next across the line, while Mike Lairson and Thomas McDonald tied with 16-22 apiece. In section three, Jason Tan (22-16) finished at the head of the pack, with Frank Harris and Mark Gorman sharing second place with their 20-17s. John Eulenstein (19-20) wasn’t too far behind, while Michael Falkenberg finished with 13-24. Maree Sullivan had all the answers in section four, taking top billing with her 24-18 final score. It was a tight contest down the list, with Mason Scholes evening the ledger with his 21-21, ahead of Victor Lairson (20-22) and Patrick Nielson (19-23). In section five, it was a two-way tie for first place, with Noel Boyd and Peter Curran sharing the win with 20-18 each. The other three players all had the same number of losses, but Greg Renner’s superior win total (20-20) saw him bag third, while Pat Flynn and Patrick Oudin took 18-20. Amy Lairson dominated section six, taking top place easily with a phenomenal 24-7 and blowing away the competition. The next best was Carl Cutrona with his 15-17, followed by James Wilkinson (15-20) and Sartaj Bal (14-16). Des Steele rounded out the group with his 14-20. Simone Weston had a brilliant day in section seven, keeping her loss total to single figures with a classy score of 23-9. Tony Clarebrough (18-19) and Cate Geard (17-17) fought hard all day, while Sue Piper (14-18) and Max McAuliffe (14-23) will come back better next week.
