One of the happiest places at Christmas time in Wangaratta each year is popular toy retailer Toyworld in Murphy Street.

It's the destination for people of all ages searching for the right Christmas present, either for a loved one or perhaps for a child to write down on Santa's wish list.

This year there was someone's smiling face missing at the store with the passing of Toyworld owner Bill Michalowski in October this year.

Bill was renowned for his work for the community and was known for staying up late wrapping gifts for organisations he supported, making sure every child received something special.

His kindness and gentle spirit continue to inspire his family, staff and community, and his wife Lucy, and daughter Maria were determined to keep his tradition of generosity alive so his passing would not take away the joy of Christmas for their many customers.

The Michalowskis decided to join this year’s Give-a-Gift Appeal hosted by the Centre Against Violence, UMFC, and Gateway Health, and transformed the store's Christmas tree from a festive decoration into a special tribute to Bill, 'Bill’s Giving Tree'.

Customers are invited to purchase a toy to place beneath the tree with the gifts to be shared with local children and families supported through the Give a Gift Appeal, helping make Christmas brighter for those doing it tough.

Maria said the family had discussed the idea with Bill before he died.

"We wanted to do something different at Christmas," she said.

"Dad loved the idea, he loved kids and he always wanted to make sure that every child in our community would get at least one present at Christmas time.

"If we can do this we can help ensure that all families, no matter what they are going through, will be able to celebrate Christmas like others."

Last year, more than 290 local children and young people received presents and school supplies through the Give-A-Gift Appeal.
