Over 250 people joined in celebrations to mark 150 years of the Whitfield District Primary School on Saturday.

The atmosphere was buzzing with at least four generations of past students (including local Lauris Skinns who celebrated her 95th birthday on the day), families and staff catching up, reminiscing and enjoying the beautiful weather, food, music and company.

Past staff and students were intrigued to open the time capsule buried in 1993 when the school merged with Cheshunt South.

OSHC/SAKG coordinator Jess Young thanked the Rural City of Wangaratta for their support to film the event which will form a legacy document to go in the next time capsule that current students will bury towards the end of this year.

Jess said it was a fabulous event highlighting the students' current program.

"Many people commented on how the event was totally run by the school students, families and community, the welcoming vibe and connectedness of the community," she said.

"It was an opportunity to celebrate, to share stories, reminisce, showcase how the school has grown and the learning that currently happens, and to look froward to the many decades to come.

"Tours of the new kinder were also a hit."

Students showcased their leadership and teamwork skills as they ran the funfair style stalls in the morning, with attractions including hook a duck, guess the lolly jar, gumboot toss and tin can alley.

Jess said attendees commented on how fun and impressive this was - and also a treasured Whitty Cup tradition that has been part of the school program for many many years.

Past and current families cooked up a storm with the pizza oven and barbecue firing all day and showcasing vegetables and herbs from the kid’s kitchen garden and local wine and beer at the bar.

Local North East music group Old Jig Jog Band lead bushdancing fun in the afternoon.

Jess thanked the King Valley CWA who cooked hundreds of scones on the day to keep the masses refreshed.

"It must be a record," she said.

"We would love any students, staff and families from the past 25 years to help us write a new chapter for our Whitfield history book."
