Appin Park Primary School

Investigating symmetry

The year 3/4 students are currently studying symmetry and understanding that to be symmetrical, one half of the image or shape is the same as the other side.

The different methods they used to problem solve and find symmetrical shapes, gave them the opportunity to think outside the box and test their reasoning.

One student created a design while their partner used a mirror to show the reflection of that image, which proved challenging: trying to manipulate shapes to reflect a pattern requires engaging different parts of the brain.

Transferring this knowledge to view the natural environment or buildings and architecture, looking for symmetry, created some interesting points of discussion.
