Wangaratta’s Swap Meet and Show and Shine continues to build in popularity as bargain hunters, families and car enthusiasts filled the Wangaratta Showgrounds on Sunday.

Some 230 stall holders awaited a healthy crowd spread out around the showgrounds while close to 100 cars drove through the gates for the Show n Shine in the Wangaratta Kennel and Obedience Dog Club area.

Gloomy skies met some of the early risers as overnight rain scared only a few stallholders, but many had a great day out under a warm spring sun.

The swap meet element of the day was managed by the Wangaratta Rod & Custom Club and the Early Holden Car Club looked after the Show and Shine.

Wangaratta Rod & Custom Club president Darren Proctor said there was nothing but smiles, bargain buys and great cars among a crowd which he said was bigger and stronger on the last two years.

“We had lots of good feedback from the stallholders saying it was well run and run properly; so that's a feather in our cap,” he said.

About 30 club members managed duties from setting up on Saturday night, monitoring the crowd, manning the gates and assisting stallholders and visitors.

Mr Proctor said he was extremely thankful for the work of his volunteers, along with members of the Wangaratta Lions Club, Moyhu Lions Club, the Veteran, Vintage and Classic Car Club of Wangaratta and Rural City of Wangaratta Council who all supported the event.

Early Holden Car Club president Adrian Twyford said there was a mixed bag of cars on display at the back of the showgrounds from your usual Ford, Holden and Valiants to chrome bumpers and hot rods.

“There were a lot of good show cars that have been really done up and a lot of money spent on them,” he said.

“There was a lot of variety and a lot of top cars.”

Top car trophy winners from the Show and Shine included Russel Hoare (HR Holden ute), Tony Johnstone (Ford Star model), Lance Gordon (EH Premier), Heath Lloyd (XY Falcon sedan) and Darren Young (HD Holden sedan).

Trophies for the six best cars were given and supplied by A1 Tyrepower and Shannon’s Car Insurance.

Mr Twyford said the collaboration among the many community groups involved made for a seamless day.

“It was very much a community orientated event and it went very well,” he said.
